The Places That Heal Us: What Astrology, Terrain, and Somatics Reveal About Our True Energetic Home

Have you ever noticed how some places make you feel better than others? How some people come alive at the ocean, while others feel restored only in the mountains? Some crave open air and horizon. Some melt into the quiet of lakes and ponds. And some need the roar, the crash, the wild pulse of the sea.
I’ve been tracking this in myself for years. And recently, something clicked so profoundly that it reorganized my entire understanding of healing, astrology, and the body.
Many years ago, I had a dream: Green Tara scaling down a mountain, telling me I needed to meditate every day. It took me a long time to realize the most important part of that dream wasn’t the instruction — it was the mountain.
I am mountain energy.
When I go to the mountains, I am clear. I am calm. My body recharges with a kind of strength that feels ancient and cellular. It’s not psychological. It’s somatic. It’s environmental.
And this is the part of astrology we almost never talk about.
Astrology Isn’t Just About the Sky — It’s About the Earth
In Jyotish, the Earth is the planet that impacts us the most. Yet modern astrology barely mentions terrain. We talk endlessly about planets, nakshatras, dashas, remedies — but not the actual land beneath our feet.
Traditional texts, however, are full of terrain correspondences. In Light on Life by Hart de Fouw and Robert Svoboda, each rashi is associated with a physical environment:
Aries — forest or plateau
Taurus — field or meadow
Gemini — village or bedroom
Cancer — pond or well
Leo — mountain or cave
Virgo — cultivated land with water
Libra — busy town or marketplace
Scorpio — hole or cavity
Sagittarius — villages, cities, treasuries, military posts
Capricorn — forests with plenty of water
Aquarius — villages
Pisces — watery places
When you combine these terrains with the lagna (Ascendant) — and then balance them with the Sun and Moon — you get a precise map of the environments that regulate a person’s nervous system.
This is environmental astrology. This is somatic astrology. This is the missing piece.
Why Crystals Aren’t Universal Remedies
Humans love pat answers. So we get endless lists of gemstones and their supposed effects. And of course, society has gone wild for crystals.
But not everyone resonates with crystals. And for some people, crystals are actually destabilizing.
I learned this the hard way.
For years, I studied crystals because Jyotish recommends gemstones as remedies. I applied them liberally. And then — I stopped sleeping. For a year or two, my sleep was fractured, shallow, restless. I blamed menopause.
But it wasn’t menopause.
It was the crystals I had placed around my bed.
When I removed them, my deep sleep returned immediately.
This is not a small thing. This is not “woo.” This is somatic reality.
Crystals are not neutral. They are not universally beneficial. They are not for every constitution.
For my physiology, a riverstone is far more stabilizing than a gemstone.
Environmental Somatic Interventions: A New Kind of Healing Plan
Because of this, I’ve begun working with clients on what I now call environmental somatic interventions — personalized plans that include:
the terrains they need weekly
the places that recharge them monthly
the objects that support their physiology
the objects that destabilize them
the rooms where certain items should or should not be
the environmental “subtracting” that brings relief
the environmental “adding” that brings strength
This is Vastu, yes — the Vedic form of Feng Shui — but it’s also something deeper. It’s about the body’s relationship to land, air, water, stone, altitude, and silence.
It’s about where you go to reset your system.
For me, that means driving an hour and a half into the mountains every week. I’ve always been a walker, a hiker. I always knew the mountains were my vibe. The ocean, on the other hand, depletes me. It makes me tired. It takes me a full day to recover.
But moving water in the mountains — waterfalls, streams, rivers — balances me instantly.
So I’ve cleaned out my house. I’ve removed the crystals I’d accumulated. And the difference is profound.
We Come From the Earth — And the Earth Still Knows How to Heal Us
We come from the earth. We return to the earth. We are part of the earth.
And the Earth provides remedies far more powerful than anything we can buy in a store.
Terrain is medicine. Altitude is medicine. Silence is medicine. Stone is medicine. Water is medicine. Wind is medicine.
Your chart knows where you belong. Your body knows where you heal.
Your nervous system knows where it can finally exhale.
Pay attention.
Your environment is speaking to you. And when you listen — your whole life begins to reorganize around what actually restores you.
